Surabaya, E Java, March 29 (Antara) - The Surabaya government is exploring the use of larvae to reduce the increasing volume of organic waste in the city.

"Organic waste from the households and public spaces will be consumed by the larvae. Such process will be stopped before the larvae turns into a fly," Surabaya's Sanitation Department and Green Open Space secretary Aditya Wasita told Antara on Wednesday.

The waste management method adopted from Switzerland will be carried out in some of the total 26 composting houses.

The utilization of larvae in waste management aims to reduce the volume of waste that reaches 1,500 tons per day and between  300 and 600 tons of it goes to Benowo final disposal site.

"Actually, we have managed to reduce the waste volume by about 40 percent," Wasita noted.

The adoption of larvae method for organic waste treatment is expected to be realized this year, with its composted-organic materials to be utilized for animal feed.

"We have not yet made an MoU with the Swiss Government, but we have already communicated with them," he said. (*)
