Jombang, E Java (Antara) - President Joko (Jokowi) Widodo expressed a hope that Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) as one of the largest Muslim organizations in Indonesia can serve as a bridge by showing to the world that Islam is a source of peace.

"I have a great hope that NU to not only demonstrate about the understanding of civilization but also Islam as a form of mercy," the president said when inaugurating the opening of 33rd NU congress here on Saturday.

In addition, the president also expected that NU keeps cooperating with various circles in effort to improve the world order.

"Especially in overcoming poverty and inequality as the root cause of terrorism," Jokowi pointed out.

According to the president NU has an important role to play by demonstrating a moderate Islamic lifestyle.

 The president further appreciated the theme of the conference, namely "To Strengthen Islam Nusantara (archipelago) in a bid to establish civilizations of Indonesia and the world."

On the occasion, Jokowi also revealed the recent visiting British Prime Minister David Cameron who wished to know a lot about Islam in Indonesia which is tolerant and peaceful.

"During the visit he was interested in studying the history of Islam in our country, the advanced Islam and tolerance. He also wanted to know more about Muslim organizations in Indonesia," the president stated.(*)
