Jakarta (Antara) - Transport minister Evert Erenst Mangindaan expressed concern over the large number of victims in the traffic accidents that had occurred during Idul Fitri holiday. "I am very worried and appeal to people to prioritize safety and security," he said in a written statement received here on Friday. Based on data from the police from six days before the fall of Idul Fitri on Monday to two days afterward, a total of 2003 accidents had occurred in the country leaving 429 people dead. In view of that, the minister has instructed directors general in his office to assure transportation safety and security and increased coordination with other offices concerned, such as regional governments, police, National Search and Rescue Agency, PT ASDP Indonesia Ferry, shipping company PT Pelni, and health services. "Prevent overloaded boats, skippers with no certificate, and unlicensed boats and reduce motorists that dominate road accidents," he said. National police chief General Sutarman said the number of traffic accidents during the Idul Fitri holiday this year was lower than last year. "Traffic accidents at a national level are down until a day after the fall of Idul Fitri," he said while inspecting traffic flows in Cagak Nagreg, Bandung, West Java, on Sunday. He said during Idul Fitri holiday, 700 traffic accidents have been recorded so far, which have left 200 dead and 300 others wounded.
