Ciamis, West Java - West Java police detained 57 illegal immigrants from Iran and Afghanistan at Cimerak beach in Ciamis district on Thursday, a police spokesman said here on Friday.
"The illegal immigrants from Iran and Afghanistan were detained at Cimerak beach and then brought to Cijulang police office," Cijulang police spokesman Commissioner Saeful said.
He noted that the police first noticed people from the Middle East at the beach on Thursday morning and, after several hours, watched as the number of people increased.
The suspects arrived at the beach separately in rented cars from Jakarta, causing the police to suspect the group was made up of illegal immigrants from the Middle East.
"One of the 57 illegal immigrants attempted to run away when the police tried to detain them, but later the police were able to capture him," Saeful said, adding that the group was transferred from Cijulang police office to Ciamis police headquarters for further investigation. (*)
