Jakarta, Mar 6 (Antara) - The Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) Summit will adopt four outcome documents to promote peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indian Ocean region.

"The IORA Summit will adopt four documents that will be approved by the heads of member states of the IORA," Director of Information and Media of the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Siti Sofia Sudarma stated at the Jakarta Convention Center on Sunday.

The four documents are the IORA Concord, IORA Action Plan, IORA Declaration on Preventing and Combating Terrorism and Violent Extremism, and Joint Declaration of the IORA Business Community to Build Partnerships for a Sustainable Economic Growth.

These documents had been discussed at a meeting of high-level officials on Sunday (Mar 5) and were supported by all 21 member states of the IORA and seven dialogue partners. All documents will then be gradually discussed at a ministerial meeting on Monday (Mar 6). Thereafter, all the documents will be ratified by the state heads or prime ministers of all member states of the IORA on Tuesday (Mar 7).

The most important document to be adopted at the summit will be the IORA Concord, which is also known as the Jakarta Concord. It is a strategic document containing IORA's vision and cooperative norms to strengthen regional architecture in facing any challenges in the region.

The document of the IORA Action Plan will contain actions to implement the Jakarta Concord and strengthen the implementation of commitments to the handling of issues of intersectoral and priority areas.

The IORA Declaration on Preventing and Combating Terrorism and Violent Extremism is a joint agreement of the member states of the IORA on the importance of combating terrorism and extremist violence.

The Joint Declaration of the IORA Business Community to Build Partnerships for a Sustainable Economic Growth will include efforts to reinforce cooperation and partnership of the IORA member states for the expansion and diversification of trade and investment that will be focused on the development of small and medium enterprises.

According to Sudarma, the Indonesian government stressed that the IORA needs to be further developed to strengthen regionalism and foster the habit of constructive dialogue.

"The efforts (of developing IORA) can be conducted through the development of norms, rules of engagement, and institutional affairs," she noted.

She also explained that the Indian Ocean region will benefit Indonesia, including as a source of potential investments, with a total value of US$3.05 billion, or 41 percent of the value of actual investments.

"The Indian Ocean Region is also one of the tourism centers in the world that is able to attract 121.8 million tourists contributing $146.8 billion to the region's economy. Indonesia also experienced a trade surplus through trade cooperation with 14 member countries of the IORA.

IORA will be celebrating its 20th anniversary in March 2017. Indonesia, as the current chair of IORA, will host the first ever IORA Leaders' Summit on March 7, 2017.

The first IORA Leader's Summit will be held under the theme "Strengthening Maritime Cooperation for a Peaceful, Stable, and Prosperous Indian Ocean" on Mar 7.(*)
