Jakarta, (Antara) - Big cities in Indonesia would need rail-based transportation system to handle the problem of traffic jams, as it could be developed in narrow lands and carried more passengers, an official of the Transportation Ministry said.

"Additional roads would not be effective as it would only become a short-term solution. We would have to build rail-based transportation system especially for Jabodetabek (Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, Bekasi)," head of the Jabodetabek Transportation Management Agency (BPTJ) Elly Sinaga said in a discussion on transportation at Podomoro University here, Thursday.

A mass transportation mode is urgently needed to address the problem of traffic jams, and rail-based transportation system would be one solution, she said.

It would include conventional trains, commuter line, monorail, light rail transit (LRT), mass rapid transit (MRT), and automated people mover system (APMS).

Meanwhile, vice chancellor of Podomoro University Yohanes Prayitno said, synergy among universities in Indonesia would be needed for the development of the country.

"As a private university in Jakarta, we need to give our contribution in the development of rail-based transportation system in Jabodetabek," he said.(*)
