The participants hail from Spain, Italy, San Marino, the United Arab Emirates, Kenya, Japan, Australia, Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, China, Laos, and Indonesia.
The race started in Sidodadi Glenmore and will conclude at the Blambangan Park in Banyuwangi City.
The participants, grouped in 14 international teams and six domestic teams, were flagged off by Chairman of the Indonesian Cycling Federation Raja Sapta Oktohari and Head of the Domestic Promotion of the Tourism Ministry Hendri Kamoza, among others, at the start line last Tuesday.
Some of the teams, such as Singha Infinite of Singapore, Trengganu Cycling Team of Malaysia, 7 Eleven of the Philippines, and Ukyo Cycling Team of Japan, had taken part in the ITdBI last year.
The newcomers include the Down Under team of Kenya, Kinan Cycling Team of Japan, Wisdom Henxiang Cycling Team of China, Black Inc Cycling Team of Laos, and Geumsam Insam Celo of South Korea.
Peter Pouly of Singha Infinite from Singapore, the winner of ITdBI 2014 and 2015, expressed confidence that he would be able to retain the trophy this year.
Banyuwangi, known as the Sunrise of Java, has organized the annual ITdBI since the past five years.
The race route, which covers a total distance of 567 kilometers, includes a climb to Mount Ijen, known across the world for its blue flame.
Banyuwangi District Head Abdullah Azwar Anas noted that this year's race included new routes to showcase novel tourist destinations.
Anas also hoped that this year, the ITdBI will maintain its predicate of excellence that it had won last year.
The key to maintaining this achievement is by guaranteeing the safety of all participants, he remarked.
The ITdBI has been included in the annual calendar of the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI).
"According to UCI, ITdBI is one of the seven best cycling races in Asia. It has encouraged us to be more detailed in organizing the race, and every year, we always strive to lend new colors to the ITdBI," Anas added.(*)
