Surabaya, E Java, July (Antara) - The Surabaya city government is planning to develop a number of alternative roads to overcome traffic congestion in the capital of East Java province.
Head of the Design and Utilization Section of the Surabaya City Road and Drainage Maintenance Office Ganjar Siswo Pramono said here on Sunday the growth of roads in the city is not in proportion to the rising number of motor vehicles.
"The alternative roads are solution to traffic congestion in certain areas. One of them will use the existing roads in housing complexes," he said.
However, he added that many residents have an objection to the plan as they are afraid of being disturbed when access to roads in the housing complexes is opened to the general public.
In addition, many housing complexes also close access to the roads in the housing complexes using portals, he added.
City layout observer Benny Purbantanu of Petra Christian University said he supports the city government's plan to develop alternative roads.
"We hope the plan will soon materialize as it is difficult to build new roads while the number of motor vehicles continues to increase," he said. (*)
