Jakarta (Antara) - The oil imports to address the current domestic energy shortage are considered as incorrect energy management that the next government is expected to improve, stated National Energy Board member Tumiran. Tumiran noted that in spite of domestic gas shortage, gas exports continued, which was a clear indication of poor energy management. "This incorrect energy management must be improved, and we hope that the new government from the July 9 presidential election will do so," Tumiran emphasized here on Thursday. Tumiran added that having less than 40 gigawatts of electricity for more than 240 million population, Indonesia will not be able to compete against Singapore or Malaysia, and the downstream industry will not develop optimally. "Imagine how Sumatra can compete against Malaysia if its electricity supply is only five gigawatts," Tumiran remarked, adding that unlike Japan and South Korea, which import fuel to increase the added value of their products, Indonesia even imports energy for consumption. Therefore, he expressed hope that the next government will no longer export coal and gas and use it for producing electricity as the domestic energy demand remains high. Tumiran pointed out that Indonesia has an abundant diversity of natural resources but is yet to manage them properly to enhance the nation's energy security. According to Finance Minister Chatib Basri, the government may save Rp15 trillion in energy subsidy this year by controlling the quota of subsidized fuels and raising the tariff of electrical power. Nearly Rp7 trillion will be saved from spending on fuel subsidy and Rp8 trillion from spending on electricity subsidy, the minister noted in a meeting with the budgetary board of the House of Representatives (DPR) here on Tuesday.
