Jakarta (Antara) - The central and regional governments must cooperate and coordinate efforts to support the 4.6 million neglected children in Indonesia, a cabinet minister stated. "The central and regional governments at the provincial and district levels as well as state agencies, domestic, and international institutions must cooperate and coordinate their efforts to provide support to neglected children," Social Affairs Minister Salim Segar Al Jufri said here on Tuesday. He noted that this cooperation would ensure that the efforts made via Indonesia's child-protection programs would not be unnecessarily duplicated across states. The minister stressed the urgency of establishing an integrated child-protection plan in the country because the welfare and protection of children were challenges that should be borne by all relevant government agencies. Salim emphasized the need for a system based on both conceptual development and evidence-based research. The ministry of social affairs had attempted to support 1.37 million children from 2009 to 2013 through its child social welfare development program (PKSA). This year, it has allocated Rp388 billion in funds to support up to172 thousand children. On a national scale, the ministry has implemented a family empowerment program (PKH), running from 2007 to 2013, which has provided support to 2.4 million families with funds of Rp3.5 trillion. (*)
