Jakarta (Antara) - Indonesia is hosting the 24th ASEAN Senior Officials on the Environment (ASOEN) meeting in Jakarta this year from August 26 through August 31. "Indonesia supports the immediate implementation of the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Scorecard, which focuses on environmental sustainability and preservation," Environment Minister Balthasar Kambuaya said here on Wednesday. The minister stated that the main objectives of the 24th ASOEN were to provide strategy and policy guidance, as well as to supervise and assess the implementation of the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC) plan, under the Environmental Sustainability Assurance framework. Besides, he continued, the meeting was aimed at coordinating cross-sector environment-related activities in line with the ASEAN Charter and also preparing reports to be presented at the ASEAN Environment Ministers' meetings. "ASEAN members have agreed to enhance regional cooperation in order to maintain environment sustainability and achieve green and clean environment," Kambuaya noted. Kambuaya said the ASOEN was formed with the sole purpose of enhancing environment sustainability in the ASEAN region, adding that all ASOEN meetings focused on sustainable development in ASEAN. To realize the ASOEN goals, several steps have already been taken, involving natural resources protection for economic and social development, the conservation and sustainable management of land, water, forests, biodiversity, coastal and marine, energy, as well as improving the air quality of the region. "ASOEN encourages the ASEAN community to actively participate in efforts to tackle global environmental issues, such as climate change and ozone preservation, through the development and adaptation of eco-friendly technologies," Kambuaya stated.
