The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries is ready to collaborate with the National Nutrition Agency for the Free Nutritious Meals program by supplying fishery products as a protein source.

"The ministry is ready to meet protein source needs in the Free Nutritious Meals program with quality fishery products to push nutritional improvement in the community," Marine Affairs and Fisheries Minister Sakti Wahyu Trenggono said in a statement from his ministry here on Sunday.

According to him, his ministry had developed fish farming that is adjusted to each region's most dominant commodity.

He further said that the free meals program that is based on local wisdom and potential is in line with fish farming that is being developed by the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries.

Trenggono affirmed that he had met with the head of the National Nutrition Agency Dadan Hindayana.

He explained that his ministry had created various fish farming modeling projects that are ready to be developed in various regions, one of them being salinity-tolerant tilapia in Karawang.

"We will build thematic fish farming that is in accordance with the most dominant potential (of each region) to meet the food needs of the Free Nutritious Meals program," he remarked.

He noted that his ministry is currently pursuing the implementation of blue economy-based policies, one of which is the development of fish farming which is deemed able to support food security without resulting in ecological damage.

According to him, 85 percent of the budget for the Free Nutritious Meals program is used to buy local foods.

The program is designed to support the nutritional fulfillment in various regions in accordance with their local potential, for example, distributing fish in fish-producing regions and eggs in egg-producing regions.

The local products that are developed in regions will be used in the program for the nutritional fulfillment of pregnant women, breastfeeding women, under-five children, and students.
