Lumajang, E Java (Antaranews jatim) - The Karangkates Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Station in East Java has recorded a total of 38 aftershocks as of 08.00 a.m. on Friday after a 5.5-magnitude earthquake rocked Malang district the day before.

"In the wake of the megathrust earthquake with a magnitude of 5.5 on the Richter scale which could be felt in East Java and Bali, we should like to stress that the earthquake is still normal," chief of the BMKG station Musripan said on Friday.

The epicenter of the earthquake was in the sea about 184 kilometers south of Malang district at a depth of 46 kilometers.

According to prominent seismologist Kiyoo Mogi, in the seismology the earthquake which rocked Malang district and its surrounding areas is categorized as an earthquake of type I, an earthquake which is preceded by foreshock, and is later followed by mainshock and aftershock, he said.

"The earthquake which rattled the south of Malang is interesting (to study) because it reminds us of the active megathrust zone in the south of Malang," he said.

The most appropriate step to anticipate the possibility of active megathrust zone is to stay alert for it and strengthen mitigation without worrying about it too much, he said.(*)
