Malang, E. Java,(Antaranews Jatim) - Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman said the result of research by high educational institution could be used for agricultural development in the country.

"We are serious in applying the results of research by high educational institutions to develop and expand Indonesia's agriculture," Andi Amran said on the sidelines of a lecture on Building Self Sufficient and Substantial Agriculture in the Era of Industry 4.0, at the Brawijaya University here on Friday.

Andi Amran's  said he was serious and committed to applying the results of a research by two lecturers of the Brawijaya University on new high yield variety of red corn  and fertilizer.

Red corn, as a result of the research  is a new variety with varied benefits, mainly for health as it contains anthocyanin. and the fertilizer as a result of the research could increase rice productivity by 30-50 percent.

The Agriculture Minister has asked the Agriculture Technology Study Center (BPTP) of East Java to facilitate large scale  application of the results of the research. The Minister said the researchers could provide enough red corn to be grown in 100 hectares of farmlands, and the fertilizer for 200 hectares of farmlands.

"We will buy the fertilizer to be used in 200 hectares of farmlands. If it could increase the productivity by 50 percent, we will buy it for 1,000 even 2,000 hectares of farmlands," Amran told thousands students  and lecturers of the agriculture faculty of the University.

He said he was aware of the difficulty of becoming a researcher. "All researchers work hard  and the reward is far from being proportional with the result of the hard works," he said.

The Agriculture Minister, therefore, has made a number of breakthrough to encourage research  such as in the application of online system  by providing incentives for researchers.

"In the past the process could be as long as three years, but now it is online to save cost and time. Researchers could also put their products through e-catalog. We give royalty, even some already produce up to Rp6 billion," he said.

Amran said he hoped there is permanent cooperation  between the Research and Development Body of the Agriculture Ministry  and universities in the regions that the result of researches could be applied and contribute to agricultural development in Indonesia.

Apart from being serious about the results of research, Amran asked the students of the Malang Brawinajaya University to become successful farmers.

The role of students as a young generation is important to develop modern farming to make Indonesia the world's food barn, he said.

"Young people should not fear failure. We hope agriculture students could become successful farmers to lift programs of agriculture to strengthen the country's food security," he said.(*)
