Jember, E Java, (Antara) - Floods inundated at least 23 villages in 11 sub-districts in Jember District, East Java, Thursday evening, following several hours of incessant rains in the region, Heru Widagdo, Jember disaster mitigation office head, noted here, Friday.

The affected villages are Harjomulyo in Silo Sub-district; Wonoasri and Sanenrejo villages in Tempurejo Sub-district; Glundengan in Wuluhan Sub-district; Yosorati, Sumberagung, Jatiroto, and Gelang villages in Sumberbaru Sub-district; Curahlele and Karangsemanding in Balung Sub-district; Bagorejo and Kepanjen in Gumukmas Sub-district; Sukorejo, Bangsalsari, and Karangsono in Bangsalsari Sub-district; Kraton and Paseban in Kencong Sub-district; Pondokjoyo, Sidomekar, and Semboro Lor in Semboro Sub-district; Tanggul Wetan and Klatakan in Tanggul Sub-district; and Kaliwining in Rambipuji Sub-district.

Floods also submerged the Miftahul Ulum Islamic boarding school located in Yosorati Village in Sumberbaru Sub-district, forcing some 300 students to move to higher ground.

Meanwhile, hydrometeorological disasters are forecast to be dominant in Indonesia in 2018, according to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB).

"It is forecast that natural disasters in 2018 will be dominated by floods, landslides, and whirlwinds. It is estimated that 90 percent of the natural disasters would be hydrometeorological in nature," Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman of the BNPB, remarked in Jakarta, recently.

The rainy and dry seasons are expected to be normal this year. There will be no El Nino, which could cause drought, or La Nina, which could trigger excessive rains.

"However, floods, landslides, and whirlwinds will remain dominant, but their locations will depend on the intensity of precipitation," he noted.(*)
