Jakarta, (Antara) - Indonesia has been inducted as Chairman of the ASEAN-Canberra (ACC) Committee for the January-June 2018 period at the Ambassadorial Meeting of ASEAN Member States in Canberra, Australia.
"Indonesia's Chairmanship of the ACC reflects the confidence of representatives of ASEAN member countries in Australia towards the leadership of Indonesia," said Indonesian Ambassador to Australia concurrently Vanuatu Kristiarto S. Legowo in a written statement received here on Saturday.
The Indonesian chairmanship is important in carrying out a number of important programs such as the ASEAN-Australia Special Summit (AASS) to be held in Sydney in March 2018.
The AASS will be attended by all heads of state/government of ASEAN member countries together with the Australian prime minister.
The implementation of AASS is a major concern and strategic importance of the Australian government towards ASEAN, especially given the potential partnership cooperation that can still be built in the future.
Ambassador Kristiarto also stressed that Indonesia's leadership will not only be focused on political relations, but also to promote economic cooperation and strengthen inter-community relations.
Indonesia will coordinate the participation of Representatives of ASEAN member countries in a number of international activities in Australia such as "National Multicultural Festival" 2018 or "Canberra Run 2018", which will further enhance ASEAN's image and profile to the general public in Australia.
Meanwhile, cooperation in the economic field is reflected in the implementation of "Business Summit and SME Conference" which among others aims to strengthen networking among ASEAN member countries' business.
ACC has been conducting major activities such as ASEAN's 50th Anniversary held at Governor House with the Governor General of Australia as the host.
"Through closer cooperation among representatives of ASEAN member states in Canberra including with various socio-cultural, tourism, community and approach programs to the Australian Government and Parliament, it is hoped that ASEAN will become more recognized by the people of Australia," he said.(*)
