Jakarta, (Antara) - The Ministry of Rural and Backward Area Development and Transmigration said it would strengthen inspectorate offices to control the use of village funds .
Incentives would be provided as regional inspectorate office would have to carry out the extra watchdog duty to prevent misuse or corruption of village fund, Rural, Backward Area and Transmigration Development Minister Eko Putro Sandjojo said.
Rural funds are considered easily to become the target of corruption for weak control in the region. A number of regional officials are already arrested for alleged embezzlement of village funds.
"The government will strengthen control in the regions by strengthening inspectorate, and other regional and district leaders. Therefore, there is no need to establish new agency. What is important is to strengthen the regional inspectorate office," Eko Putro Sandjojo said here on Wednesday.
The incentive is given as the inspectorate offices have to carry out additional duty, Eko said, adding, "We still discuss about additional budget for the inspectorate offices."
The minister also asked the people to help in controlling the use of the village funds, adding the government has disbursed quite large funds for rural development.
"This year every village is entitled to Rp800 million from the village fund program a year. Therefore, any misuse of the fund should be reported immediately to police, or the Corruption Eradication Commission. The Pamekasan case would not be the last if no action taken against it," he said.
The Minister referred to the recent arrest Pamekasan regent, head of the district prosecution office and a number of district officials including village chief for alleged corruption of village fund.(*)
