Surabaya (Antara Jatim) - Surabaya City in East Java will host the 2016 Austral Asia Handgun Championship (AAHC) at the Karang Pilang shooting range from August 29 to September 2 this year.

"Contingents from 21 countries are certain to take part in the intercontinental shooting contest," spokesman for the 2016 AAHC Hadi Susilo said here on Tuesday.

He stated that the event will be organized by the Indonesian Shooting and Hunting Association (Perbakin), in cooperation with the Surabaya city government.

As many as 140 local participants from different cities in Indonesia will compete along with 376 foreign participants, he informed, adding that 40 of the local participants will come from Surabaya.

The handgun championship will be divided into open, standard, production, classic and revolver categories. During the four-day event, the organizing committee will provide 24 shooting points which will be divided into six shooting points per day.

He said Surabaya was made host for the event after besting Malaysia in an auction held by the  International Practical Shooting Confederation (IPSC).

In addition, the IPSC also considered Surabaya, the capital of East Java province as having adequate infrastructure, thus making it safe to host the event.

"Surabaya also has a world-class shooting range in Bumi Marinir Karang Pilang," he explained. (*)
