Jakarta, (Antara) - Human rights cases in Papua should be settled through a holistic approach, Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan stated.
"I will meet all stakeholders, including religious leaders, students, military and police personnel, and NGOs, to prove the country's commitment to settling the issue, Pandjaitan noted in a press release received here on Thursday (June 16) evening.
Luhut conducted a working visit for three days in the province of Papua.
The visit was intended to resolve the issue of human rights in the province in a holistic manner.
In May 2016, the ministry established an integrated team to handle human rights violations in Papua and West Papua. The team was in charge of collecting data and information and conducting an analysis.
The results of the investigation conducted by the integrated team will be submitted to President Joko Widodo.
"An integrated team is responsible for investigating and analyzing cases of alleged human rights violations in Papua. The team has concluded that of the 22 cases that were investigated, three constitute human rights violations, and these are currently in the process of being settled," the minister noted.
The three cases are related to the 2014 Paniai shooting, the 2001 Wamena incident, and the 2003 Wasior incident, he revealed.
The minister has never interfered in the work process. Anyone found guilty should be punished.
"We also invite Ambassador of New Zealand to Indonesia Trevor Matheson, Ambassador of Solomon Islands to Indonesia Salana Kalu, Ambassador of Fiji to Indonesia S.T. Cavuilati, and Papua New Guinea's Ambassador Peter Ilau as part of the efforts to show our commitment to resolving these cases without any deception," the minister affirmed.
The minister said a plenary meeting of the commission had agreed to set up a task force.
"Commissioners of Komnas HAM would assist the government in resolving the cases," the minister emphasized.
In addition, Papua Police Chief Paulus Waterpauw denied the news stating that the police had not arrested one thousand people protesting against the establishment of an integrated team.
On the occasion, the minister also visited the offices of the Financial Services Authority (OJK) in Jayapura.
The minister also suggested the OJK to look for cadres among the entrepreneurs in the local community.
The minister was scheduled to visit Wamena, Manokwari, and Merauke.(*)
