Jakarta, (Antara)- The Jakarta Metro Jaya Police have detained 91 Chinese and Taiwanese nationals for allegedly committing transnational cybercrimes from Jakarta.
"The Metro Jaya Police, in cooperation with the International Police, have uncovered a human trafficking syndicate and frauds targeting fellow Taiwanese and Chinese," Director of the Jakarta Police's Crime Investigation Directorate Senior Commissioner Krishna Murti noted, here, Thursday.
The 91 detainees, 36 were arrested in Ancol and 55 on Adiyaksa Raya Street, North Jakarta.
The Chinese were recruited in Jakarta by fellow foreigners to conduct cybercrimes targeting Taiwanese and Chinese in their countries by using computers and phones.
The Jakarta police suspected that they were recruited by a Japanese syndicate.
Earlier, the Metro Jaya police detained Cen, a Taiwanese national, and WA, an Indonesian, for allegedly facilitating the Chinese involved in cybercrimes in Jakarta.
The police handled the case in coordination with the Justice and Human Rights Ministry's immigration office.
International crime syndicates have used Indonesia as a location for conducting their operations, according to the Jakarta Metropolitan police.
"Now, Indonesia is no longer the location of the victims of transnational crimes but has slowly changed into a place for international crime syndicates to carry out their criminal operations," Senior Commissioner Krishna Murti.(*)
