Jakarta (Antara) - The dismissal of Gen. Sutarman as national police chief does not accord with the existing article, according to Chairman of the House of Representatives' Commission III Aziz Syamsuddin. "I do not say the dismissal violates (the law), but, in my view, it will affect the legitimacy of the national police," he stated here on Monday. Under Law No. 2/2002, if a police chief is dismissed, a new successor must be appointed accordingly, he added. "After the dismissal, the President should appoint a new police chief instead of an acting police chief," he noted. President Joko Widodo had issued two decrees on Friday (January 16), dismissing General Sutarman as national police chief and appointing Deputy Police Chief Commr. Gen. Badrodin Haiti as acting national police chief. The decision was taken after National Police Chief hopeful Commr. Gen. Budi Gunawan, despite Parliament's approval, was made a graft suspect by the Corruption Eradication Commission in connection with certain rewards he allegedly received through suspicious transactions. Aziz remarked that Commr. Gen. Badrodin Haiti is not Gen Sutarman's successor but an acting national police chief. "We cannot let this happen, because an acting police chief cannot make strategic policies," he added. Commr. Gen. Haiti is an acting police chief and hence the decisions he makes will not have much value as his authority is not as strong as that of a national police chief, he observed. "The problem must be resolved as quickly as possible so that it will not affect the police's performance," he stressed. (*)
