Surabaya, E Java (Antara) - Police in East Java have stepped up patrols at jewelry stores in several parts of Surabaya city to anticipate rampant robberies ahead of Idul Fitri festivities in the province. "We have conducted patrols to secure the festivities since a week ago but the patrols have been intensified since Saturday (July 19)," spokesman of the East Java provincial police Snr. Comr. Imam Sayuti said on the sidelines of a patrol at jewelry stores at the DTC malls here on Sunday evening. The police have formed three teams to patrol jewelry stores in the city everyday. "Today the patrols are conducted at DTC mall, Kembang market and Blauran market," he said. The patrols will end one day ahead of Idul Fitri holiday, he said. A gang of armed people robbed a jewelry store at Gambar Market in Blitar district, East Java, on Friday (July 18), taking away one kilogram of gold jewelry. Director of the East Java provincial police's detective unit Snr. Comr. Bambang Priyambada said the police have sent a team to Blitar to disclose the jewelry store robbery. (*)
