Tulungagung (Antara) - HIV/AIDS cases in Tulungagung, East Java, increased 11 percent over January-April period in 2014 despite the ban on prostitution operations in this district. There were 86 HIV/AIDS) patients at the VCT Clinic in the past four months, the district AIDs Control Commission member Ifada said here on Tuesday. Prostitution has apparently continued illegally after the closing of two prostitution centers in this East Java city since 2012. In the whole of last year, there were 741 known cases and now the number rose to 827 cases, Ifada said. "The number would likely continue to grow as there are many HIV/AIDS carriers reluctant to go to clinic for examination," she said. The regional administration's hospital RSUD dr Iskak has a VCT clinic and mobile health care service offers free examinations of HIV/AIDs, she added. With the closing of the prostitution centers, illegal operations of prostitution is feared to have spread out of control in the district, she said.(*)
