Surabaya, East Java (Antara) - The Surabaya Children Crisis Center (SCCC) in East Java has asked all parties, particularly parents, to beware of rampant child trafficking in the city. SCCC Director Edward Dewaruci said here on Monday that the child traffickers in Suarabaya were still underage or even the friends of the victims. "The case of child trafficking in Surabaya is like an iceberg," said the staff of East Java Children Protection Institute (LPA) Advocacy Division. According to him, negative media information, the influence among peers, and the presence of many amusement centers contributed to the cases of child trafficking. To anticipate the children from being trapped into child trafficking cases, Edward expressed hope that parents should control their children. "Parents should be able to detect the behavior and conduct of their children in earlier stage," Edward said. Asked about legal handling against underage child traffickers, Edward said that based on Law No.23/2002 on child protection, the perpetrators needed to get special protection. "Children involved in the legal case must have a good protection and rehabilitation," Edward said. (*) (T.SYS/B/O. Tamindael/F. Assegaf)
