Jakarta - Norwegian Environment Minister Bard Vegar Solhjell has lauded Indonesia for its efforts in tackling deforestation. "We know all about deforestation in Indonesia, but now we are very satisfied with what the Indonesian government has done about it through a moratorium, good law enforcement, and a transparent system," he said after attending an event called "Beyond Carbon: REDD+ Towards Sustainable Development and Social Justice" here on Tuesday. "Illegal logging is a complicated problem that must be overcome through the cooperation of all stakeholders," Solhjell noted. Meanwhile, Norwegian Crown Prince Haakon Magnus said: "There is a close affinity between Indonesia and Norway in terms of abundant natural resources." He stated that the two countries must continue to increase cooperation in their efforts to overcome deforestation and climate change. "Deforestation and climate change are our major concerns, so cooperation between the two countries is required to address these issues," Magnus pointed out. He praised Indonesia, especially the REDD+ Task Force, for successfully solving many environmental problems. Magnus also expressed hope that the two countries would ¿further strengthen their forces in addressing these issues¿. "Together we can increase our economic value and maintain the continuity of our planet," Magnus said. During the event, a joint declaration was signed between the Indonesian government, the representatives of indigenous communities, and some sustainable development organisations. Magnus applauded the signing of the joint declaration. (*)
