Jakarta - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is scheduled to attend the 8th summit of eight developing countries (D-8) in Islamabad, Pakistan, next week. "During the four-day event starting November 19, President Yudhoyono will meet the Pakistani president and prime minister," presidential special staff for international relations Teuku Faizasyah said in a press statement here on Thursday. "The D-8 landmark summit will go a long way in building new foundations of cooperation among member countries as they are embarking upon new openings in the fields of economy, industry and trade," he added. The D-8 is an economic development alliance formed by a group of eight developing countries Turkey, Pakistan, Egypt, Iran, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Indonesia and Malaysia ¿ with large Muslim populations. The D-8 was founded by former Turkish prime minister Necmettin Erbakan in Istanbul on June 15, 1997. Faizasyah said President Yudhoyono would leave for Phnom Penh, Cambodia, on Saturday to attend the ASEAN and East Asia summits before proceeding to Pakistan. "On November 22, President Yudhoyono will attend the D-8 Summit in Islamabad to discuss five priority issues for Indonesia, relating to trade, agriculture and food security, small and medium business cooperation, transportation, and mineral and energy," he added.(*)
