Jakarta - The public has to understand how to manage watersheds so that economic development can be focused on an eco-centric system, according to a ministry official.
"Civilization begins and ends in rivers and the public has to know how to manage them," Forestry Ministry Secretary General, Hadi Daryanto said here during the national seminar on watershed management on Wednesday.
He added that the ministry will improve management of 108 watersheds across the country as the main priority.
Daryanto stated the ministry has so far managed as many as 90 watersheds through joint efforts with provincial administrations.
"I am proud of the achievement and hope that remaining efforts for watershed management will finish by 2013," he said.
He stated that the minister has called on provincial administrations to arrange the management and the promotion of watersheds as well as to directly monitor the process in the field.
"Minister has also urged the provincial administrations to improve public empowerment through watershed management and to provide watershed facilities by using maps of crisis-hit areas,¿ he said.
Speaking at the same event, Director of Watershed Planning, Evaluation and Management (PEPDAS), Eka W. Soegiri stated that watershed management was aimed at effectively improving government regulation No.37/2012 about watershed management.
He stated that coordination, as well as synchronization from all government elements are needed.
