Bengkulu, Sumatra, - The Kaur district government in Bengkulu province has built hatcheries for turtle eggs to save the mammals from extinction. "The hatcheries have been built in Muara Sambat, North Kaur sub-district, which is a coastal forest area," said Asnawi, PRO of Kaur district government, when contacted by phone on Tuesday. He said that the hatcheries were located near three natural turtle habitats. Each hatchery has a size of 10x4 meters and can accommodate hundreds of eggs to be hatched. Asnawi added that the turtle hatcheries were ready to be used and expected residents to deposit turtle eggs or report spawn locations to the hatcheries in return for incentives. Head of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (DKP) of Kaur district, Yetmenson, said that building the hatcheries was an idea of the Kaur Regent, Hermen Malik, to preserve the endangered animals. There are three turtle habitats in Kaur district, namely in Merpas village in Nasal sub-district, Linau village in Maje sub-district and Sekunyit village in North Kaur sub-district. There are four turtle habitats in the Nasal sub-district, namely Tanjung Betuah village, Batu Langun, Ulak Pandan and Merpas. He appealed to all residents along the coastal areas to not sell the turtle eggs to the market. "If you find turtle eggs, just bring them to the hatchery. We give a higher incentive than the market price," he said. (*)
