Jakarta - The Indonesian currency rupiah extended gain on Wednesday on market optimism with the European Central Bank (ECB) pledge to ease the European debt crisis.
The rupiah gained 15 point against the US dollar reaching the level of 9,440 in Wednesday's inter bank transactions in Jakarta on Wednesday morning.
"Rupiah strengthened on market expectation that the ECB will do something to cope with the debt crisis in a meeting this week," Johanes Ginting , an analyst from Monex Investindo Futures, said here on Wednesday.
Johanes said the optimism that bond buying program will be launched again to press down the cost of Spanish and Italian loans will be strengthened following ECB's pledge to do "whatever necessary to safeguard euro."
"Rupiah will likely continue to gain at least until the announcement of the ECB's decision this week," he said.
Samuel Sekuritas analyst Lana Soelistianingsih said the rupiah is relatively stable against the US dollar with the market still waiting for the decision to be announced by the US Federal Reserve and the ECB.
Lana said global investors are waiting for possible "quantitative easing" (QE3)by the Fed and for the decision of the ECB on plan to buy sovereign bonds.
"Investors are still in the position of 'wait and see', she said. (*)
