Rome (ANTARA/Xinhua-OANA) - Sustainable development cannot be realized unless hunger and malnutrition are eradicated, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said in a statement on Wednesday. "We cannot call development sustainable while nearly one out of every seven men, women and children are left behind, victims of undernourishment," director-general of the Rome-based organization Jose Graziano da Silva said in the statement. The quest for food security could be the common thread linking the different challenges all countries had to face in building a sustainable future, he added. FAO stresses that hunger reduction and sustainable development are irrevocably connected, and called upon the governments attending the Rio+20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development to be held in Brazil on June 20-22 to commit themselves to reducing hunger. Establishing rights to resources, promoting fair agricultural and food markets, investing public resources in innovation and infrastructure were some of the acts suggested by FAO for a world with both healthier people and healthier ecosystems.(*)
