Bengkulu - Iranian ambassador to Indonesia Mahmoud Farazenda has offered Bengkulu students the opportunity to obtain scholarhips to study nuclear science in Iran.
"We are open to anyone who wants to study nuclear science in our country including to students from Bengkulu. There are opportunities to obtain scholarships," the ambassador said here Thursday.
He made the offer after meeting with Bengkulu Acting Governor Junaidi Hamsyah in connection with a Bengkulu government's invitation to him to attend a Tabot Festival in Bengkulu.
According to Mahmoud, Iran was developing atomic energy to develop the science, not to make weapons of mass destruction as many people suspected.
The ambassador was making a two-day working visit in Bengkulu to discuss cooperation opportunities.
The visit will also be used to discuss the Tabot ritual to commemorate the death of the Prophet Muhammad's grandson, Hussein, in Karbala, Iraq.
The discussion on Tabot would be held at the College of Islamic Studies (STAIN) of Bengkulu under the theme "The Existence of Bengkulu's Tabot Tradition in Enhancing the Role of Social, Cultural and Political Education of the People."
Bengkulu Acting Governor Junaidi Hamsyah said the Iranian ambassador's visit was an excellent opportunity to explore cooperation in various fields with Iran.
"The scholarship offer to study nuclear science in Iran was very positive. We will follow it up later," Junaidi said.
The brief meeting with provincial administration officials was used to describe the potentials of Bengkulu's natural resources and a number of other cooperation possibilities, including in the fields of culture and education.
The head of Bengkulu's development and planning board, Edy Waluyo, explained the potentials of the resources that are still open for investment, including for entrepreneurs from Iran.
The main sectors which still required the participation of investors were mining, plantations and fisheries, he said. (*)
