Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) should have independent investigators so that it can perform better, a corruption researcher said.
Director of the Gajah Mada University's Anti-Corruption Study Center Zainal Arifin Mochtar said here on Saturday Law No.30/2002 mentioned that KPK investigators must be recruited from the police and public prosecutor offices.
Speaking at a discussion on the KPK polemics, Zainal said that prosecutors and police who were assigned as investigators at the KPK were not independent because they still depended on their respective institutions.
If the investigators committed a mistake the KPK could not take action against them because they were only assigned at the KPK and they were still under their respective institutions.
The University of Gajah Mada political observer therefore suggested that the KPK should have independent investigators. If they are assigned by their institutions, their links with their institutions should be cut off.
"In order to change the pattern of the assignment, the law regarding the KPK should also be revised," Zainal added.
Deputy Chairman of the House of Representatives (DPR)' Commission III on legal affairs Catur Sapto Edy said his commission was now discussing efforts to revise the KPK law.
Catur said he supported the idea to reinforce the KPK so that it would be able to optimize its efforts to eradicate corruption optimally.
He said that KPK ahead should have its own plan and agenda setting in eradicating corruption, not just following complaints from the people.
