Surabaya, E Java - The provincial government of East Java has set itself the target of sending 65,000 Indonesian migrant workers to overseas this year, a deputy governor said. "The composition of the would-be workers that we will be placed abroad will comprise a bigger portion in the formal sector while in the number in the non-formal sector will be smaller," East Java Deputy Governor Saifullah Yusuf said here on Tuesday. The deputy governor was speaking to the opening of an overseas manpower bourse in the formal sector organized by the National Agency for Placement and Protection of Indonesian Workers Abroad (BNP2TKI). The deputy governor appreciated the BNP2TKI efforts to increase the number of workers in the formal sector. "It would automatically reduce the number of workers in the informal sector," Saifullah said. Saifullah, who is also former minister for acceleration of development in disadvantaged regions, said East Java had up to June this year placed 25,584 migrant workers (39.36 percent of the target this year) overseas, with remittance they already sent home worth Rp1.295 trillion. He hoped that workers who had the intention to work overseas would take posts in the formal sector. "The 10,000 job opportunities offered by this manpower bourse are a great chance for Indonesia to increase the number of its formal workers," he said.
