Tomohon, N Sulawesi (Antara) - Mount Soputan in Minahasa Tenggara district, North Sulawesi province, erupted at 11.38 a.m. local time on Sunday, sending volcanic ash to up to 4,000 meters into the sky, a spokesman said. The volcano showed signs of increased earthquake from Wednesday to Saturday before it erupted on Sunday, officer of the Mount Soputan observatory post Asep said on Sunday. "Up till now there is no subsequent eruption following the main eruption," he said. Asep said the volcano also spewed molten lava as far as 500 meters from the peak in the westerly direction. The observatory post still recorded tremors following the eruption, indicating that there were still energy supplies from beneath the crater that might form a lava dome in the peak, he said. "Mount Soputan is still in the alert status, with the danger zone covering 6-kilometer radius," he said. The volcano erupted twice on January 6 at 02.47 and 19.47 respectively.
