Ternate, North Maluku (Antara) - A powerful earthquake measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale jolted the city of Ternate and its surrounding areas in North Maluku at 11.31 am Eastern Indonesia Standard Time (WIT) on Saturday. Local Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) spokesman Suwardi said the epicenter of the earthquake, with a potential to trigger a tsunami, was located 1.94 degrees northern latitude and 126.50 degrees eastern longitude at a depth of 10 km. He said the epicenter was also located some 132 km northwest of West Halmahera, 156 km southeast of Ternate, and 180 km northwest of Sofifi, the capital of North Maluku. There were no immediate reports of fatalities or property damage, but Suwardi said he has called on coastal area dwellers to stay away from the shoreline, in anticipation of a possible tsunami. The powerful quake prompted the residents of Ternate to scramble from their homes in fear of a possible tsunami. (*)
