Surabaya, E Java (Antara) - Army Chief of Staff General Budiman has stated the Army is preparing three mechanical battalions for East Java province to adjust to the present regional and global developments.
"In the first phase, we will form a mechanical battalion in Surabaya. It will be embedded with the Branjangan infantry battalion 516 of the Brawijaya regional military command," he said during his visit to the Branjangan infantry battalion 516 and the infantry battalion 500/R on Wednesday.
During the visit, General Budiman inspected six armored personnel carriers Anoa-2 at the Branjangan infantry battalion 516 station which are prepared for the mechanical battalion in Surabaya.
"Similar mechanical battalions will also be set up in Malang and Kediri," he said.
Each of the mechanical battalions will be equipped with 52 units of main armament systems, he said.
"To date, there are six armored personnel carriers Anoa-2 at the Branjangan infantry battalion 516. The number of main armament systems will be increased to 52 units in 2015, of which 26 will be procured until the end of 2014," he said.
Main armament systems at the mechanical battalions will mostly be made up of armored personnel carriers Anoa-2 produced by state-owned PT Pindad, he said.
"I think the existing six armored personnel carriers Anoa-2 are enough for exercises at this moment," he said.
He said the main tasks and functions of the mechanical battalions will not be much different from those of infantry battalions.
However, the maneuver speed and precision capability of the mechanical battalions will increase, he said.
"With the armored personnel carriers Anoa-2, I think the maneuver speed and personnel protection will be better so that the safety of personnel will highly be respected," he said.(*)
