Situbondo, E Java (Antara) - Several tectonic earthquakes have jolted Situbondo in East Java repeatedly since Sunday, damaging a few buildings and homes. "The Geology Climate and Meteorology Agency (BMKG) said the shocks were from tectonic earthquakes in a depth of five kilometers. The people do not dare to sleep in their houses due to the shock," the chief of Situbondo Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency, Zainul Arifin, told Antara here on Friday. The earthquakes had caused five houses and a place of worship to develop cracks. The agency noted that 92 earthquakes had jolted the region and triggered trauma among the people. The Situbondo mitigation agency had prepared two tents in Bato Kodung Village of Asembagus Sub-district for the people. The agency noted that at least 120 families are living in the shelters. The agency also coordinated with the Tretes BMKG to monitor the earthquake activity in the region. "The BMKG officers had noted that the biggest earthquake measuring 4.3 in the Richter scale occurred at 24:00 hours last night," Zainul added. The agency asked local residents to be vigilant, particularly when they are indoors. They should come out quickly if there is an earthquake. (*)
