Jakarta (Antara) - The State Intelligence Agency (BIN) is preparing a strategic operation to ensure success of the upcoming legislative elections on April 9, according to BIN Chief Lt. Gen. Norman Marciano. Speaking at the National Coordination Meeting on the Establishment of General Elections, here on Tuesday, Norman stated, "BIN is designing an intelligence integrated operation by involving various institutions to support the upcoming general elections." He explained that the integrated operation aims to prevent possible conflicts and violence from occurring during the election process. Therefore, he added that intelligence coordination and cooperation from various institutions at central and regional levels were needed to secure the general elections. "BIN is maximizing the strength of the institutional capacity and ability, improving its human resources and modernizing its technology to support the elections," he added, during the National Coordination Meeting. Meanwhile, Home Affairs Minister Gamawan Fauzi stated that the meeting was hosted by the Ministry of Home Affairs to coordinate with other ministries and non-government ministerial institutions for the establishment of the upcoming legislative elections. "Through the meeting, we want to establish a common perception and to strengthen cooperation with all stake holders in our effort to make the elections a success," the minister asserted. According to him, the meeting was attended by 3,654 participants, consisting of all governors, district heads, mayors, representatives from the General Election Commission and regional Election Supervisory Board (Bawaslu), and a number of political party leaders. The minister expressed his hope that through the National Coordination Meeting, the legislative elections will run smoothly, fairly, and in an orderly manner, without any disturbances. (*)
