Jakarta (Antara) - Creating a green infrastructure should be an important part of development in Indonesia to ease the impact of green house gas emissions on the global environment, according to Public Works Deputy Minister Hermanto Dardak. "Sustainable and environmentally friendly infrastructure should be an important aspect in development," Hermanto said, in a written statement made available to Antara here on Saturday. According to Hermanto, government policy will determine the use of resources and the progress of investment in the future. Therefore, he expressed his hope that policies made by the government should be focused on people-oriented green infrastructures. In addition, the public works deputy minister underscored the importance of planting trees as part of overall development and preserving the environment to reduce carbon emissions. "Compared with other types of trees, every trembesi tree that has been planted along roads is able to absorb 28.4 tons of carbon-dioxide per year. Besides, 'Vetiver' grass is also able to prevent shallow erosion," Hermanto said. In line with efforts to reduce green house gas emissions, he said the Ministry of Public Works is currently developing a green technology to reduce emissions and sound pollution. He noted that solutions to climate change, as the result of increasing green house gas emissions, should be sought to counter increasing damage to the environment.(*)
