Jakarta (Antara) - The democratic system in Indonesia needs to be made more efficient in order to reduce election related problems, according to Chairman of Honorary Council of Election Management Body (DKPP) Jimly Asshiddiqie. Speaking at a discussion during the National Political Week at International Conference of Islamic Scholars (ICIS) office, here on Thursday, Jimly stated that the efficiency of democracy can be realized through simultaneous legislative and presidential elections. "Legislative and presidential elections can be held simultaneously to avoid presidential election standoffs because of the legislative election results," he noted. Jimly added that in order to ensure the effective functioning of a democracy, the governors, district heads and mayors should be elected openly by the regional representative councils. The former Constitutional Court chairman opined that deputy regional heads should not directly be elected at one go along with the regional heads. "If needed, break it off, because it could create conflicts between the regional heads and their deputies," Jimly said, adding that political liberalization, applied in Indonesia, generates a political oligarchy and political dynasty. Meanwhile, Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) Chairman As'ad Said Ali pointed out that pragmatic and materialistic neo-liberal democracy will make election systems dependent on capital. "Systematic use of moneyed politics in general elections is rampant in our society," he noted.(*)
