Jakarta (Antara) - The Indonesian Islamic organization Muhammadiyah opened a television channel, called tvMU, as part of the celebration of its 101st anniversary here on Monday. "This is the mandate from a meeting to a meeting," chief of the organization Din Syamsuddin said. He noted that opening the television channel had been decided at a meeting in Aceh in 1995. "It was continued in the meeting in Jakarta in 2000, in Malang in 2005 and in Jakarta in 2010," he said. He added that the television channel could provide education and enlightenment to the public. "It is hoped it will become a means of making the nation smarter," he said. The television channel will be available to the public using a parabolic antenna, as well as through streaming internet and in a pay service. He said initially the channel would air programming four hours per day. Din added that tvMU was prepared to cooperate with other media that are committed to education and enlightenment. Officials noted that on its 101st anniversary, Muhammadiyah remained committed to being a movement aimed at enlightening the nation. (*)
