Tangerang, Banten (Antara) - The military and police kept big crowd of workers at a standstill at a main street of Tangerang on Thursday to prevent them from coming close to the Jatake industrial estate and the Bitung toll road.
The striking workers who started the rally at Jalan Raya Gatot Subroto in front of the Sabar Subir department store, planned to close the road to the industrial estate and the toll road.
The workers of various labor unions were negotiating in the street with the security authorities lead by Jati Uwung police chief Comr. Alamsyah
"We want to go to the Jatake Industrial Estate but the military and police would not allow," a worker Yanto said.
The Indonesian Federation of Labor Unions earlier announced plan of nation wide labor strike to press for their long demand for putting an end to outsourcing system of labor recruitment and pay hike and social security.
The federation leaders said 3 million of workers would join the strike on Thursday and Friday.
In bonded zone Batam island just south of Singapore, a number of roads are closed to the public to give way for thousands of striking workers to rally at Simpang Kabil on Thursday.
Police allowed the workers to pass on foot from a number of industrial estates to their gathering place at Simpang Kabil.
Other reports said around 2,500 workers were walking on foot from the Batamindo industrial estate to Simpang Kabil and a convoy of cars carrying around 1,500 workers were moving Tanjunguncang via Simpang Basecamp, Sekupang, Tiban, Simpang Jam to Simpang Kabil.
Smaller convoys and groups were also seen moving from other places such as from the Batu Ampar industrial estate to the same destination of Simpang Kabil.
The workers said they would continue the strike and the rally until Friday.
"We want to tell the public that we are fighting for the interest of the people in general not only the workers," deputy chairman of the Batam branch of the Indonesia Federation of Labor Unions Mustofa said. (*)
