Banyumas, Central Java (Antara) - Former chairman of the Constitutional Court Mahfud MD said Indonesia is facing big problems on weak leadership. Mahfud apparently referred to the present government under the leadership of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono Indonesia needs a leader who is both bold, firm and clean, Mahfud said in front of a group of sympathizers at an Islamic boarding school here on Wednesday. Mahfud has been named presidential candidate by minority Nation Awakening Party (PKB) after withdrawing from taking part in the convention held by Democratic Party to select a presidential candidate for the ruling party in 2014. "This nation is being threatened by weak leadership," he said, adding the country does not need a clean leader but fainthearted nor a leader who is strong but not clean," he said. He said the country is in for big problem as many of its leaders have been mired in various cases that they could not perform their duties as they are expected. "The future leader must have the spirit of being red and white. Red means courageous and firm and white means having clean track record," he said. He called on the followers of Nahdatul Ulama (NU), the country's largest non political Islamic organization to take part in saving the country. The country needs a "clean" leader that is capable of "cleaning" the corruption riddled country, he added. He said he had traveled and visited strong bases of NU which has been the main supporters of the National Awakening Party to remind them that the country needs to look for the right person to lead the country. He said he consulted with Muslim religious leaders and NU leaders before he pulled out of the convention of the Democratic Party and decided to accept offer to be presidential candidate of PKB. (*)
