Jakarta (Antara) - Former ruling Democrat Party chief Anas Urbaningrum is suspicious that strong power has been behind his naming as suspect in a corruption case by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) recently. "I have never been put under any status by the KPK so far because KPK has worked independently, not under pressure from the media or public opinions or certain power," he said at a press conference at the party's headquarters to announce his resignation as the party's general chairman here on Saturday. He said he started to think that he would be named suspect only after KPK was urged to immediately determine his status and he was asked to focus on dealing with his legal problems. Only since then he said he believed he would be named suspect by the KPK. "It means I have been declared guilty," he added. Moreover, he said, some members of the party's executive board had also expressed optimism that he would be named suspect the following week. The optimism of a number of Democrat Party cadres was later followed by the KPK's decision to name him suspect. As a man of ethical standards he said he would follow the legal process that would come based on existing procedures. "I still believe that justice and truth will prevail if the process is done fairly and transparently according to standard criteria," he said. Anas who is also former general chairman of the Indonesian Muslim Students Association (HMI) said he would defend himself as best he can in the judicial process. Anas was named suspect by KPK in an alleged corruption case in the sports complex construction project in Hambalang, West Java, on Friday. President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono as chairman of the party's supreme council decided to take over the running of the party to allow Anas to focus on dealing with his legal problems.(*)
