Jakarta - ASEAN can become example of nuclear-weapon-free world, Indonesian Foreign Affairs Minister Marty Natalegawa said here on Tuesday.
"To be the example of nuclear-free world, the ASEAN states can play their major role in the destruction of global nuclear weapons," Marty said at a seminar on "Maintaining a Southeast Asia Region Free of Nuclear Weapons".
He noted that one thing for the world to take example from ASEAS was the ratification of Southeast Asian Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone Treaty (SEANWFZ) by its all member states.
"The SEANWFZ ratification by all ASEAN member states is part of regional commitment to maintaining world peace by making Southeast Asia a nuclear-free zone," Marty said.
Further, he added that to be an influential region at international level in the nuclear weapon destruction effort, the ASEAN member states should have a high commitment to that issue.
"The commitment should be expanded not only at national and regional levels, but also at global level," Marty said, adding that the ASEAN member states should also encourage other countries outside the region to ratify Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT).
He opined that to create a nuclear-weapon-free world, ASEAN must build relation with other organization such as International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). (*)
