Pontianak, W Kalimantan - Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) Chairman Jusuf Kalla has encouraged the people of Pontianak city in West Kalimantan to make blood donation a way of life. "Donating blood to help patients who need it will also make one healthier," he stated during his visit to the PMI building here on Wednesday. "Regular blood donation is very good for health, so people should not be reluctant to donate their blood," said Kalla, former vice president of Indonesia, who visited Pontianak's PMI building to review its facilities. He noted that blood donation facilities available at the PMI building should be improved. "Although we are glad to see that many young people here want to become Red Cross volunteers, the PMI in Pontianak needs to step up its logistic system," Kalla pointed out. "The PMI here is not yet ready to deal efficiently and effectively with an emergency situation, such as after a disaster, because of its inadequate logistic system," he noted. Meanwhile, local PMI Chief Yakadul Nasir said the PMI has only one blood donation ambulance. "Ideally, the PMI here must have at least two ambulances to reach every area in West Kalimantan," he added. (*)
