Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi emphasized the urgent need for global governance reform to address pressing global challenges.
She delivered these remarks during her speech at the "Summit of the Future" at the 79th session of the UN General Assembly in New York on Monday.
Marsudi stated that ongoing geopolitical rivalries, sluggish economic recovery, and the climate and energy crises demand global collaboration.
"Sadly, we are seeing the opposite," she said. "Trust in multilateralism is fading, and its effectiveness continues to be questioned."
She emphasized that the world needs an inclusive, adaptive, and effective global order, which can be achieved through reforms to the UN Security Council and international financial systems.
"We cannot afford to wait any longer. We must push for a true and real reform. A reform that listens to the voices of developing countries and addresses their concerns," she stated.
Marsudi also highlighted two additional key points during the summit, themed "Multilateral Solutions for a Better Tomorrow."
First, she called for the creation of lasting peace, particularly in relation to the Palestinian issue.
"The ongoing genocide by Israel must be stopped immediately," she stressed.
Second, Marsudi urged the protection of every nation's right to development.
She argued that all nations, including those in the Global South, should be free from trade discrimination and debt traps. If this is not achieved, some countries will inevitably be left behind.
She noted that these critical issues must not be overlooked and called for the Summit of the Future to serve as a pivotal moment in building a sustainable future for all.
