The Surabaya City Health Office has found several new clusters of COVID-19 transmission in the East Java provincial capital since early 2022.

"The causes of the new clusters are the high mobility of Surabaya's residents, a decline in the people's compliance with health protocols, and emergence of the Omicron variant, with a high transmission rate," Head of the City Health Office Nanik Sukristina stated in Surabaya on Friday.

The new clusters of COVID-19 transmission are classified into public facility, family, overseas and domestic travel history, face-to-face schooling and office clusters.

To this end, the health office is endeavoring to expedite the administration of the third dose or booster vaccination to the general public as part of the precautionary measures against COVID-19 transmission, she remarked.

The third dose or booster vaccination, earlier targeted for residents aged 18 years and above, especially senior citizens, has been expanded to cover the general public, she remarked.

Sukristina remarked that residents, who received their second shot of COVID-19 vaccine three months ago, can be administered the booster vaccine.

The third dose, or booster vaccination, which kicked off in the city on January 12, 2022, has targeted 87,626, or 96.63 percent of the 90,678 senior citizens, which have received their second dose of COVID-19 vaccine three months ago, she remarked.

"The coverage of third-dose recipients other than senior citizens had reached 328,163, or 56.47 percent of the 581,134 second-dose recipients in the past three months," she added.
