Jakarta (Antaranews Jatim) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) is scheduled to distribute a total of 3,026 land certificates to the residents of Bekasi, West Java Province, and East Jakarta, on Thursday.

"Today, Mr President will distribute 3,026 land certificates," Agrarian and Spatial Planning Minister Sofyan A. Djalil noted here, Thursday.

The distribution of land certificates will be held in the Hajj Dormitory's Hall in South Bekasi, Bekasi Municipality.

Of the total 3,026 certificates, 526 will be presented to the residents of Bekasi District, one thousand to the residents of Bekasi Municipality, and 1,500 to the residents of East Jakarta.

The land certificates could be used by the owners to support their businesses, the minister stated.

"Usually, if their businesses are expanding, lenders will offer bigger loans," he noted.

He expressed hope that the owners of land certificates would preserve and protect their certificates.

"They should be careful. If they use the land certificates as debt guarantees, they must be disciplined in paying back their debts," he remarked.

President Jokowi had earlier expressed optimism of achieving the target of issuing seven million land certificates in 2018 and nine million in 2019.

"I am convinced the target is achievable if we continue to improve the system," Jokowi remarked in Jakarta on May 15.

In 2019, the government is targeting to distribute 4.3 million hectares to the community, so that they will have access to productive land and help to improve the welfare of society.

He remarked that the National Land Agency (BPN) usually issued only some 500 thousand to 600 thousand land certificates per annum. Jokowi was surprised to witness that the BPN had prepared millions of certificates, as it usually issued some 500 thousand a year.

"However, I do not care how it would handle it. It is up to them, as it is part of its service duty. We told them that the target is seven million, and it should be met. I am confident that hopefully it would be met," he remarked.

The president stated that the issuance of certificates is basically the government's move to redistribute assets and conduct agrarian reform.

"We have not yet distributed several certificates. This year, we have distributed 1,088 thousand hectares of land to the people, community, and boarding. We distribute them from the land we have taken back, reaching 12.7 million hectares," he added.(*)
