Jakarta, (Antara) - Indonesia will establish a center for Human Evolution, Adaptation, and Dispersals in Southeast Asia, which is one of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization's (UNESCO's) programs, an official stated.
Harry Widianto of the Cultural Heritage Preservation and Museum of the Ministry of Education and Culture noted here on Tuesday that Indonesia had already proposed the establishment of the institution to the UNESCO three years ago.
This year, in November, the UNESCO will decide whether Indonesia can establish a human evolution center for the Southeast Asian region.
"Three years ago, Indonesia had sent a proposal, and they then sent experts to conduct a study. They have prepared a report in six languages to be submitted to the UNESCO and will be discussed during the general conference in November," he said.
He said Indonesia has huge potential as a country that is home to several human evolution sites.
Meanwhile, Director General of Culture of the Ministry of Education and Culture Hilmar Farid said regardless of whether the UNESCO gives its approval, Indonesia will continue to establish the institution.
"If it is approved, we will have easier access to the network and technical guidance, among others. However, if it is not agreed, we will still establish it," he said.
According to Farid, the institution will serve as a forum for collaboration between researchers in the field of evolution.
The institution will facilitate activities, such as expert exchange, research, publications, and conferences.
"This is a form of 'container' to develop various activities that were, so far, held freely. With the institution facility, human evolution experts from various disciplines can meet," he explained.
The institution will be funded using money from the state budget and will come directly under the Directorate General of Culture of the Ministry of Education and Culture.(*)
